Eating disorders have proven to be extremely serious conditions, with at least 11 million people in the US affected each year. EDs have spread across age, race, ethnicity and socio-economic class and are now prevalent in over 40 countries worldwide. According to the NIMH, at least 1 million of the US sufferers are male, and anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric diagnosis. Every eating disorder involves a host of psychological and physical problems with untold economic costs and emotional suffering. While professional literature on the subject has grown a great deal in the past 30 years, it tends to be exclusively research-based and expert clinical commentary on treatment is lacking.
