This book explores current trends in etiology and antibiotic resistance of pathogens causing different types of surgical infections worldwide. It discusses recent advances in diagnostic approaches in bacterial and non-bacterial surgical infections, including the surgical complications of parasitic invasions. It also summarizes recent guidelines for prophylaxis of infections complications in surgery, and for improvement of diagnosis and treatment of surgical infections.Surgical infections represent a very big and diverse group of diseases which, despite advances in techniques of surgery and anesthesia, presence of modern equipment and improving perioperative health care in hospitals, still lead to significant morbidity and mortality. In general, surgical infections include two big groups - infections which require surgery management, and post-operative infective complications of non-infectious diseases; such complications are frequently caused by multidrug resistant nosocomial strains of microorganisms. This book discusses questions of prophylaxis, diagnosis and treatment of surgical infections of different location, both community-acquired and nosocomial, such as intra-abdominal, wound infections, infections in trauma surgery, in cardiac surgery and, in neurosurgery. This provides an interesting aspect to the book for use by a broad spectrum of specialists in different areas of surgery as well as in microbiology
