Perhaps gastroenterology is the most pervasive of all clinical specialties in medical practice. Certainly, people are frequently aware of symptoms arising from the gastrointestinal tract which, of course, are mostly self-managed in the community. These can range from an episode of diarrhoea and vomiting to concerns over diet and nutrition through to problems arising from more specific disease-based pathology. The book is structured so as to address the spectrum of issues that concern people and which form the questions presented to their attending clinicians. This book is not just about the latest research into the subject. Rather, it seeks as its aim to help clinicians in their daily work by providing an evidence-based, expert opinion on the questions that patients pose in everyday clinical practice. It should also readily support decision making and act as a resource for professionals from all backgrounds (in practice and in training) and for patients with some pre-existing specialist knowledge to aid them in making the best possible decisions about their management. Questions that range from explaining the new and esoteric to others which challenge time-honoured practice are posed, as well as addressing the sorts of problems that routinely face a GP, for instance questions that they would want to discuss with a specialist colleague. The chapters are presented starting with the mouth and working through the gastrointestinal system southwards, with various stops along the way to consider disorders affecting the liver, other related organs and extra-GI manifestations of gastrointestinal disease. The book continues with consideration of nutrition and obesity, screening and surveillance, investigations and further review of drug treatments. It finishes with the presentation of useful addresses, websites and journals which will point the enthusiast (both lay and professional) to sources of further reading. The content of this book is not intended to be an exhaustive treatise on all aspects of gastroenterology since a subject as large as this can generate much longer tomes. However, we wanted to cover important issues succinctly, in a way that allows easy access to the information and thereby produce a book that becomes a valued resource for those who use it.Table of Contents:Preface How to use this book The mouth and disorders of swallowing Dyspepsia and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease Other upper gastrointestinal problems Jaundice and liver disease Iron deficiency anaemia Irritable bowel syndromeConstipationDiarrhoeaRectal bleeding and bowel cancerExtraintestinal manifestations of gastrointestinal tract diseaseNutrition and obesity dietsScreening and surveillance in gastroenterologyInvestigations in gastroenterologyDrug therapy in gastroenterologyChemotherapy in gastrointestinal tract cancersAppendix 1: Useful organisations and websitesAppendix 2: Drugs commonly used in gastroenterological practice References List of patient questions
